About Ted Stuckless

Ted Stuckless was born in 1948 in the historic island community of Twillingate, off Newfoundland’s northeast coast. A self-taught artist, he built his early practice through remarkable resourcefulness — making his first brushes from his own hair and mixing soot with white paint to create his earliest works.

Working from Driftwood Art Studio in a century-old general store once owned by his father, Ted paints in oils, pen and ink, and also works in woodcarving. His art is known for carefully documenting the traditional Newfoundland way of life, from fishing stages and wharves to the graceful form of the inshore punt.

Alongside these coastal scenes, his work often reaches into biblical themes and spiritual questions. That same curiosity extends beyond the canvas: music, history, electronics, and scientific invention have all played a role in his creative life, shaping a studio practice that is both artistic and deeply inquisitive.

Ted has earned recognition as one of Newfoundland’s foremost painters, with works held in public, private, and corporate collections, including Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as collections abroad. Today, he continues to find inspiration in the changing light of Twillingate, creating work that stands as both a record of Atlantic Canada’s cultural history and a reflection of a curious, searching mind.
